Naga099 Emperor and his consort dish

Chinese Jingdezhen 景徳鎮 octagonal dish with a design in fencai, powdered colors, subtly shaded in green, purple, yellow, red, gray, and white. At the center of the design seems to be an Emperor and his consort or concubine. There is an idea bubble just above his head, as in a cartoon, To his left and right are two pairs of scholars with students. One is offering a writing slate, the other a libation of some sort. Beautifully detailed surface, possibly from one of the Chinese operas. The edge of the dish is in a matching vegetative scroll design. The back is highly decorated in the design of a bamboo grove, in red. A complex and wonderfully executed piece. Top Length: approx. 31 cm. Top Width: 16.5 cm. Bottom Width: 20x8cm.Height: 5 cm.
