Naga145 Arita red painted octagonal plate Octagonal shallow rimmed serving plate done in traditional akae 赤絵(red painted) style of the Uchiyama 内山area of Arita town. Deriving from the earlier Ming Swatow Ware of China 呉州赤絵、this piece by a female Professor of Ceramic Art at the Arita Professional Training Institute, echoes the traditional central roundel of a phoenix, surrounded by perhaps a more Japanese circle of peonies and fish (catfish?) The red against the white porcelain is, of course, a sign of happiness and wealth. The only other color used is a rich green. Width 31.5 cm., back base width 29.5 cm., height 3 cm. The piece is signed Toku 徳, and stamped 睦plus one other ideogram that I can not read.
