Naga161 Arita inban Chinese mountain and river octagonal plate An octagonal serving plate (kakusara 角皿) in blue-and-white stencil from Arita. Meiji period. The interior design is a sansuiga 山水画, a Chinese style painting of mountains, river, and sea, this time with three men seated on a cliff enjoying a glass of wine, a small boat in the river, and a temple on the far side with a stupa reliquary tower. This is surrounded with the Chinese key design. The exterior lip repeats the three friends of winter design (bamboo, plum, and pine), adding the orizuru or origami folded crane for good luck. The left lip band has a firing defect in the glaze indicating the precarious nature of formed porcelain that shrinks when fired. The reverse carries the usual four repeating patterns of flowers and leaves. The inner diameter is banded once on the inside, and three times on the outside. No other marks save for the stacking tail in the middle. Height 4.5 cm, largest diameter 33 cm., bottom diameter 17 cm. Slightly irregular shape.
