Naga163 Arita elegant signs inban

Fanciful blue-and-white stencil (inban) kakuzara design from Arita. Meiji Period. The edges are fluted in an unusual decorative flourish. The eight-sided borders carry whimsical lozenzes of birds on branches in the four corners, with flower lozenges and rabbit circles scattered elsewhere over often-found geometrics. The center design is an elegant representation of signs of the genjiko incense game, and other circles containing the symbols of eternity, the crane, the pine, and the phoenix. I see Chapter 23 Miyuki (The Royal Outing), and Chapter 46 Agemaki. References would be to the Emperor, and to the two sisters Oigimi and Naka no kimi. Chinese key design in the inner border. The back carries a design of four bound leaves with trailers. Width/Height 26.5 cm, back rim circle 5.5 cm. Two small nicks at upper right-back, and at lower left-back.
