Naga164 Arita flower plate

Hand-brushed blue-and-white kakuzara design from Arita, in bold straight lines with curved cloud designs in the four border corners, and a curved line design of three flowers in the center. Early Meiji or late Edo. The back side carries hand-brushed designs of the kanji for mountain 山and four dragonflies in the corners. The signature can be read Gan 玩 that can be seen on several others of the kakuzara in this collection. The boldness of the design anticipates cubism, I think, in the deformation of the natural world into curves and straight lines that reduce and recombine ones way of seeing the world. Whoever did these is a master of modern design! Width 24.5 cm, Height 25 cm., diameter of back circle rim 4.5 cm.
