Naga180 Chrysanthemum and camellia plate

An early form of Meiji inban stenciled blue-and-white from Arita, c. 1880. Notice that the back of the piece is hand painted and shows six kiln stacking marks, while the front is a stencil, not as dark a blue as some of the later inban, and characterized by the mechanical type lines and spaces between each element of the design of a fan (paulownia flowers) and two circles (chrysanthemum and camellia respectively). Designed as an all-season plate, this type of stencil came to be produced in great numbers in the Meiji Period (1968-1912). Diameter 29 cm, Back rim diameter 17 cm. Height 4 cm. Unsigned.
