Naga194 Grand peacock octagonal plate

Lovely and unusual octagonally sided piece (kakuzara) from the Nabeshima (Ookawachi) area, Meiji Era, in a blue-and-white stencil design of a grand peacock standing on a rocky promontory against a bold design of camellias and cherry blossoms. The overglaze is in a celadon that is usually reserved for much more expensive pieces, but elsewhere in this collection, one may find pieces that are hand painted with this same overglaze. This plate is fluted. The reverse carries a freely drawn representation of mountains and rice fields. No mark. Width 31.2 cm., height 31.5 cm., back circle diameter 18 cm. The back side has several very small chips on the edges.
