Naga199 Shochikubai and DNA grid stencil plate A large Arita charger in a blue-and-white stencil design of shochikubai (pine, bamboo, and plum) in the center, with a larger band of mijinkarakusa (minute Chinese vine) that I call the DNA grid. I have several other plates in this collection with the same design. This one is rather perfect, save for the nubs of clay or other sand particles that were affixed to the front surface during the firing. That this plate has survived for over a century, despite the flaws in the surface attests to the great labor it took to produce it, from the painstaking application of the stencils, to the risky business of firing outside in a noborigama, using red pine or similarly hard woods. The reverse is hand painted in the Chinese vine pattern. There are seven kiln stacking marks on the bottom. Late Edo, early Meiji. Diameter 40.5 cm, back circle diameter 24.5 cm. Height 6.5 cm. @ @ @ naga199 Arita charger $135.00 (shipping & packing available) We accept VISA and MASTERCARD See more at Richard Arts
