Naga201 Chinese boy stencil plate

Mikawachi blue-and-white stencil charger with indented edge (probably an accidental firing mistake, but arresting) in an unusual design of hatching in chrysanthemums and the seikaiha (Blue Ocean Waves), with two interspersed repeated designs of Chinese boys called karako in Japanese. The center is the same pine, bamboo, and plum design usually seen, but the addition of karako boys is quite unusual, and points to the Mikawachi kilns that specialized in karako patterns. They still do, in fact. The reverse carries a bold repeated stencil of camellia leaves and blossoms. Diameter 38.5 cm., back circle diameter 22 cm. Height approx. 5 cm, but varies. Meiji Era.
