Naga245 Nabeshima court carriage platter

Medium sized oval platter, inban stenciled pattern of two genjiguruma or court carriages of the Heian Period (c. 1100 ad) surrounded by maple leaves, camellias, uguisu warbler in a flowering plum tree, and cherry blossoms. The overglaze is celadon, used for a brief period in the 1880fs in the Nabeshima area of Ookawachi. The reverse carries four stylized and stenciled plum blossoms. There is no mark or kiln stacking mark on the reverse, but an area of fused celadon glaze with sand on the front surface, caused by a mistake in kiln stacking. The human error here only makes this plate the more endearingly hand-made. Meiji era. Length 36.5 cm., width 29 cm., height varies approx. 4.5 cm.
