Naga380 Fukurokuju (god of good fortune) ceramic bisque

Ceramic bisque with overlay of brown and white glaze, possibly from the Kyoto area, not Kyushu. The figure is of a comical, portly, Fukurokuju \, one of the seven Gods of Good Fortune: some Taoist, some Buddhist, some Japanese, some Chinese. Fukurokujuu is Taoist and governs such areas as copious children, wealth, and long life. Accountably, his forehead is elongated in the Taoist manner of indicating great intelligence (here rather phallic), long ears (intelligence and sexual prowess) His clasped hands have been broken off. Edo period. 18th century. Width 17cm., height 26 cm.
