Naga395 Bronze cast figure of eBoy Riding an Ox'

Bronze cast figure of a young herdsboy riding a buffalo and playing a flute. Showa period. Japanese, but represents a Chinese scene called eBoy Riding an Oxf (kigyufuefukidoji RJq) known since Edo period (18th c.) copybooks as a proper design for ceramics. The bucolic nature of the figure comes from sets of Zen paintings known as eTen Oxenf (\}) The boy represents the finite self while the ox represents the infinite self. The finite encounters in infinite and is awakened, led, becoming one who forgets his limitations until he becomes one with the ox and in perfect harmony with the universe. The simple herdboy figure gives representation to this simple idea.
Length 31 cm., height 26 cm. Two pieces.
