Chinese porcelain Jingdezhen (景徳鎮) iconic portrait of the Great Helmsman of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the 1960’s, Mao Zedong 毛沢東　（1893−1976）Sometimes known as Chairman Mao, leader of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death, 31 years. He wrote much to specify how the peasants and agricultural classes were to rise up to remake China under the banner of communal effort, but his ideas have been largely left behind in the wake of China’s current economic boom in which individual entrepreneurial spirit has triumphed over state-sponsored industry. Once these figures were kept almost religiously by Chinese families, but now they can be found in great numbers in antique flea markets. I bought this one in Shanghai, not far from the very place that Mao sat to form the Communist Party in the 1920’s. Width 11 cm., height 32 cm.
