Naga401  Nishijin silk Buddhist surplice

Kesa U Buddhist surplice, a garment worn by Buddhist priests (male) during high ceremonies. This piece is a fine example of 20th century Nishijin silk jacquard woven in Kyoto in a design of the Western Paradise: phoenix, dragon, clouds, interspersed between bands of mauve, gold and silver. Though not more than a century old, this sort of design can be seen in the earliest priestly portraits known in Japan from the Muromachi Era (15th c.) Carries the tag of Izutsuya 䓛. Silk, jacquard front, with mauve backing. 2.m x 1.12 cm.
