Naga449 Nagasaki Kajiyamachi kimono shop sign Important shop sign (mise kanban 店看板) from the Kajiyamachi 鍛冶屋町street in Nagasaki city, circa 1896. The large chrysanthemum emblem at the top signifies the shop as purveyors to the Imperial Family of Japan. Lettering beneath the emblem states that the licensing of this store to sell Hakata silk 博多織 dates from the Third National Exhibition of Industry ( Daisan naikoku kangyo hakurankai第三内閣勧業博覧会) in 1890, where perhaps Hakata silk weaving was first displayed as one of Japan’s important types of fabric. The store itself belonged to the Nagami 永見family of Nagasaki, am important kimono shop. It’s most famous son was Nagami Tokutaro 永見徳太郎, patron of the arts and a photographer and painter himself in the Meiji and Taisho eras. Zelkova plank, incised with overpainted ink.
