Naga460 Persimmon lacquer finished Japanese cedar chest

Tansu ’\ychest from the Ookawa‘åì area of Saga²‰ê, in Kyushu. For centuries, the Ookawa area has been a manufactory of Japanese furniture of all types. Even today, the road leading through town is filled with modern western furniture stores. Two large, two medium, and two small squarish drawers, with an additional four drawers behind the swing-out locked portion for family treasures, documents, and money. The slender drawer in the photo is a secret cabinet reached by releasing a latch inside the cabinet. Hand-forged iron pulls and decorative hinges throughout. Mid 19th century. Solid Sugi™ or Japanese cedar, with persimmonŠ` lacquer finish.
