Tansu 箪笥chest from the Ookawa大川 area of Saga佐賀, in Kyushu. For centuries, the Ookawa area has been a manufactory of Japanese furniture of all types. Even today, the road leading through town is filled with modern western furniture stores. Four medium drawers, two smaller drawers, with an additional three drawers behind the swing-out locked portion for family treasures, documents, and money. Hand-forged iron pulls and decorative hinges throughout. Mid 19th century. Solid Sugi杉 or Japanese cedar, with persimmon柿 lacquer finish.
