Naga465  Black lacquer finished Japanese cedar chest

Tansu ’\ychest from the Ookawa‘åì area of Saga²‰ê, in Kyushu. For centuries, the Ookawa area has been a manufactory of Japanese furniture of all types. Even today, the road leading through town is filled with modern western furniture stores. Six drawers in various sizes on the front, with an additional three drawers behind the swing-out locked portion for family treasures, documents, and money. Hand-forged iron pulls and decorative hinges. Solid sugi cedar throughout, with black lacquer finish. Mid 19th century.
