Naga476 Mt. Fuji decorative panel

Ranma 欄間 or decorative panels used as a partition between rooms, above the fusuma or shoji, but beneath the ceiling, so that light may shine through from either side. This example, in sugi cedar, is carved on both sides to represent a heavenly maiden called an apsaras, of the Buddhist paradise. This particular panel is known to have come from the now dismantled house of the head priest of the Shokaku Temple in Nagasaki, near the old Maruyama geisha quarter, hence the Buddhist imagery. The mountain carved next to the maiden seems to be a version of Mt. Fuji, but may also be Sakurajima in the bay of Kagoshima, or a fanciful combination of the idea of ‘mountain.’ Modern.
