Naga490 Apres la Pluie. Tarang, Yap 1938 Oban

@

eBefore the Rain,f the title of this portrait of two married men from the island of Yap, south of Guam, shows them apparently at ease before a storm, but to me they represent the end of their island culture. Both are in the business of taking coconuts by beating them down from the trees. The woven bag to the side of the seated man is for carrying coconuts to market. They are both middle-aged, not young as in other Jacoulet portraits of handsome Pacific islanders. The palms are also somewhat tattered. By the end of the Pacific War, nothing was left of Yap.
