A strikingly erotic portrait of a couple sunbathing in the Menado area of Celebes Island, Indonesia. The straw hat and Deco vest and sarong in green, purple, and maroon point to the Portuguese origins of many of the inhabitants. Interestingly, the lady in the portrait is actually a man, and the nude man in a bandana in the foreground is playing a role reversal to Manet’s scandalous painting of Dejener sur l’herbe (Lunch on the Grass) of 1865.
