Naga493 Nuit de Neige. “Coree” 1939 Oban

‘Snowy Night’ is my favourite in the Richard Collection of Jacoulet. The young man is most handsome of Jacoulet’s many models. He is gentle as he shades his face in the candlelight of a single lantern held against the falling snow, whose rays radiate out to the edges of the print. The man’s hand holds firmly to his blue-and-yellow fabric hat. He wears the traditional costume of Korea, already perhaps not so much in mode in the 1930’s as Japanese and Western culture swept the peninsula. White flecks of snow on a blackened sky is the most difficult to achieve of all wood block effects because is it extremely easy to smudge the black plate.
