Naga508 La Cruche:Mongolie Surimono

‘The Mongolian Amphora’ is a Christmas Card that does not exist as a full Oban print, most likely from a latter period in Jacoulet’s life. The print is very yellow and red with a backdrop of grapevines. The man is turbaned and wears his hair in the braided Mongolian fashion. This design seems very European to me, rather than in the style one normally sees in Jacoulet’s works. Yet, some of the earliest of his prints and paintings are of Western women, including his mother, depicted in a Matisse-like style. Here this is very evident.
